UNIT TITLE:               Traffic Awareness Stage 2 (Age 5 – 7)

1.    Work as part of a group

2.    Understand the essentials of road

       safety

2.1    Identify an activity which would demonstrate road safety skills

2.2    Share in the organisation of a road safety activity

3.    Recognise the importance of a

       child being aware of safe places

       with regard to road safety

3.1    Ascertain whether a child / children can identify a safe place to cross the

         road from behind a parked vehicle

4.    Recognise the importance of a

       child following a planned strategy

       for crossing the road safely

4.1    In a controlled environment assist a child / children planning out a

         strategy to safely cross the road

4.2    Observe a child / children planning out a strategy to safely cross the road

5.    Recognise that a child / children

       can identify the people who could

       help them cross the road

5.1    Ascertain whether a child / children can identify those who can help them

        cross the road

6.    Recognise the importance of a

       child understanding the meaning

       of ‘stop’ in terms of road safety

6.1    Identify why an adult and child should be aware of the importance of

         stopping before crossing

6.2    Demonstrate where it is safe to stop and wait before crossing the road

6.3    Demonstrate the awareness of kerbs and safe places to wait before

         crossing the road

7.    Recognise the importance of a

       child understanding the meaning

       of ‘look’ in terms of road safety

8.    Recognise the importance of a

       child understanding the meaning

       of ‘listen’ in terms of road safety

8.1    Demonstrate that the child / children are responding to traffic noise

8.2    Identify children’s knowledge of the term “listen” in the context of road

         safety

9.    Recognise the importance of a

       child understanding how to cross

       a road

10.  Recognise the importance of

       children being aware of audible /

       visual warning with regard to

       road safety
